⚜️ A WEEK ON THE WRIST: RADO CAPTAIN COOK OVERPOLE ⚜️

First Impressions & Specs

I’ve been enjoying some time with the new Rado Captain Cook OverPole, and here are a few thoughts from my week wearing it. First, the essentials: this latest version has been upsized from the 2022 model’s 37mm to a more contemporary 39mm diameter, 11mm thickness, and 46mm lug-to-lug. It’s also now PVD-coated in yellow gold, a bold departure from previous models.

The concave ceramic Worldtimer bezel—a signature of this line—remains, but in this larger size, it’s far more legible and visually striking. Another notable change: where the earlier version featured a grey fumé dial, this edition opts for a vintage-inspired silver sunray finish. The display caseback still allows a glimpse of the manually wound movement, a treat for mechanical watch fans.

Thoughts on the Yellow Gold Look

I’ll be honest—I’m not typically a gold guy. Most of what I wear—wedding ring, glasses, other jewelry—leans silver, and I’ve never been one to mix metals. But I committed to wearing this piece consistently: at home, to the office, and to social events.

Interestingly, this watch got noticed. And let’s be real—how often does that happen with watches unless someone is really looking? I’d say the yellow gold—especially on the beads-of-rice bracelet—really makes it pop. It’s a sparkler, and that visual impact definitely caught people’s attention.

Retro Vibes, Modern Feel

Several people were surprised to hear this is a modern release, as it really exudes strong ’60s vintage vibes. I personally prefer the 39mm case over the previous 37mm version. On my 17cm wrist, the smaller size felt just a little too compact, especially due to the prominent bezel.

If you’re concerned about the flashiness of the bracelet, no worries—the quick-release spring bars on the end links make swapping straps easy. Rado even includes a leather strap with a matching gold buckle, which tones the watch down and adds to its vintage dress-watch appeal.

Final Verdict

Overall, this is a fantastic retro-inspired piece, balancing character with versatility. It’s a great candidate for anyone looking for a dressy/casual gold watch that feels both nostalgic and fresh.
