Horologer MING is an independent watch brand which aims to revive a sense of excitement and discovery among watch enthusiasts, dedicated to refined aesthetics paired with innovative materials, mechanics and engineering. Led by founder and chief creative Ming Thein — an established designer, photographer and business strategist — the brand is renowned for exploiting the properties of light, form and colour. It works to a set of design principles: layering and interaction with light lead to visual balance and legibility, while tactility and physical balance beget wearability. Its pieces dynamically reflect their environment, rewarding careful observation and giving collectors the pleasure of continually discovering a new side to their watches. The senior team includes CEO Praneeth Raj Singh, COO Mauro Egermini, Dr Magnus Bosse as head of research and information, Hasnida Hashim as head of customer experience and Luc Bourgeois as head of production.
The Special Projects Cave pushes the approach further by allowing customer participation in experimental watches focused on developing specific new technologies, and has already spawned several firsts: the sapphire Mosaic, an internal 3D structure created inside sapphire crystal with a femtosecond laser; Hyceram, a ceramic-fused luminous material; and the LW.01, the world's lightest production mechanical watch at just 8.8 grams, realised using AZ31 magnesium alloy and finite element simulation. This combination of aesthetics and mechanics has won the brand many accolades, including the Horological Revelation Prize at the 2019 Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève and the Sports Watch Prize at the 2024 edition. MING is a truly global company with facilities in La Chaux-de-Fonds and Kuala Lumpur: production and assembly take place in Switzerland, while design, engineering and final quality control take place in Malaysia. It collaborates with leading watchmaking partners such as Agenhor, La Joux-Perret and Sellita, as well as specialists beyond the industry including Helfenstein Mechanik and Degrees of Freedom, and is a founding member of The Alternative Horological Alliance.
