WATCHES AND VACATION

By Watchguyglasgow

Holiday season is upon us or vacation for many, as we come into the summer months.

Collectors will at this time have favourite timepieces to take with them depending on the type of break they are embarking on . Beach , city visit, adventure or activity laden trip or spa / wellness retreat as examples.

The world is smaller , more accessible and for watch enthusiasts / collectors travelling it , some have long hours ahead of choice paralysis.

Enthusiasts will start debate with other collectors at this time and wrestle with themselves as to what pieces to take and leave , how many and which are suitable depending on their vacation needs.

Thought turn to if due to periods away from home if storage is required for other pieces left behind.

Safety concerns then creep in , taking watches away to certain places of the planet can be a risk due to increased awareness of criminals to profit from watch theft.

It is a very first world problem granted, taking a watch roll or equivalent with any watches is a luxury and probably shouldn’t  be the first priority. Maybe travel insurance or remembering the kids at the airport first.

What type of watch to take

Some will decide to take “ beaters” affordable every day pieces which are a bit rugged and withstand most pursuits while not drawing attention or risking theft.

But then there are those who cannot take one watch for a period of time , want something dressier for evening or a selection for the time they are away.

Of course this is all built into the fundamental collector’s mentality. We collect to wear and not worry. That statement is simplistic in reality.

Would you take a very expensive dress watch on a hike , probably not purely from a practical level but equally would you want to dine by lake Garda of an evening in one, possibly.

Of course , what excuse to pack a GMT , even if it’s a two hour time zone difference ahead or behind your local time which your phone will update when entering that zone.

Then there are those who wish to take a piece with them as a reminder , memory or just because it matches their clothing.

I fit somewhere in the middle , I don’t travel light but equally don’t take too many , or maybe I do. I take a variety to suit day and night , diver , dress etc.

The holiday collector

Spot these species in the wild at resorts , local vista , restaurant, lake , city attraction near you, they’ll probably be rolling their wrist in the air against the background of a nice view while clutching a camera or phone in the other hand.

If you listen close enough at any airport queue their hand luggage might just sound out a faint ticking noise.
