Studio Sarpaneva is the Helsinki workshop of independent Finnish watchmaker Stepan Sarpaneva, working from Tehtaankatu in the Finnish capital. The house is known above all for its moon: its watches place the moon phase at the centre of the design, and the studio has carried that signature beyond the dial into its accessories and even into software, publishing the Sarpaneva Moon app for iOS and Android so that the moon can be followed away from the wrist as well.
Stepan Sarpaneva sums up his own position with characteristic dryness: 'As far as my friends are concerned, I am doing really useless stuff. And who can blame them? Why would I do this stupid thing?' The studio's own shorthand for its universe is the oddball world of Stepan Sarpaneva. Current pieces include the Supernova and the Lunations Eclipse, alongside the Moonbridge bracelet — described by the studio as the elegance of the moon cast in steel — and the watches are sold directly as well as through a network of retailers.
