OraOrea (pronounced aura-aur-EE-ya) is an independent watch brand created by Zach Starr Weiss, co-founder of Worn & Wound and the Windup Watch Fair. Born and raised in New York, an industrial designer by education and a creative director by trade, he distils more than a decade in the industry as a writer, reviewer, designer, retailer and collector into watches that are neither futuristic nor nostalgic, but deliberately of the present. The name is a word derived from the Latin for “golden hour”: not the time of day, but the feeling of a moment when everything feels right.
Its first model is the Coriolis Pointer Date, a 38.5 mm steel watch, 45 mm lug to lug and 12.1 mm thick, powered by the Sellita SW386-1 automatic with around 56 hours of power reserve and a pointer date. It has sapphire crystal front and back and 100 m of water resistance, and comes in three dials — Skyline Silver, Venetus Teal and Dark Rhodium — with 18k gold hemispheres, in-house numerals and machined, hand-finished hands, at $3,950. Every watch carries a two-year warranty, and the collection can be seen year-round at the Windup Watch Shop showroom in Brooklyn.
