James Goodwin Jr is an independent American watchmaker who makes unique, custom, precision timepieces by hand, one at a time. Classically trained at the Gem City School of Horology in clock and watch repair, he set out with the goal of making high-quality handcrafted timepieces and quickly learned there are many ways to make movements, cases, hands and dials. He works across a deliberately wide range of methods — Metal X 3D metal printing, lathing at his workbench, cutting, filing and CNC among them: his main plates are CNC machined, while bridges are generally 3D printed in brass or milled on the lathe.
Each timepiece is handcrafted, and he makes only one at a time so that all his attention goes to that piece. Every watch carries the finishing techniques found in high-end watchmaking, including perlage, chatons, chamfered holes and kiln-fired glass enamel dials. A commission takes between four and twelve weeks depending on the variables involved; rushing, or working on several timepieces at once, is simply not an option. As he puts it, making watches is a passion, and a client who buys a piece from him can be confident that he is the one who made it. The watchmaker works to order, publishing his pricing, specifications and timelines openly alongside a gallery of his craftsmanship.
