Horopedia is a free, independent online video encyclopaedia dedicated to the art, science and culture of watchmaking, governed by the Horopedia Foundation, a Swiss public-interest non-profit organisation based in Geneva. The platform aims to preserve, document and share horological knowledge — from technical skills and historical context to core principles and professional practice — with students, professionals and enthusiasts worldwide.
The mission of the Horopedia Foundation includes educating and supporting understanding of watchmaking through rich multimedia content; producing and curating over 100 multilingual documentary films on museums, watchmaking schools, tools, components and mechanical principles; and maintaining nearly 1,000 detailed glossary pages explaining technical terms, mechanisms and historical developments. Content is provided in French, English and German.
In addition to its digital encyclopaedia, Horopedia collaborates with institutions such as Swiss watchmaking schools to enrich its educational offerings and strengthen professional training resources. The Foundation is also developing the Maison des Arts & de la Culture Horlogère (MACH) — a dynamic cultural and educational venue in Geneva scheduled to open in 2026 that will showcase exhibitions, interactive experiences and horological history.
Horopedia’s work extends beyond documentation: it participates in industry initiatives, partnerships and global events that promote watchmaking culture and heritage, helping to keep traditional skills alive while making them accessible to a broad audience.
