AIGNER is a Munich luxury house whose story begins with a bag designer rather than a watchmaker. In the 1930s the Hungarian-born Etienne Aigner celebrated his first successes at the Paris Haute Couture shows, and in the 1950s he presented his own collection in New York — the first to carry the typical "A" shaped like a horseshoe that still identifies the brand today. From New York the story moved to Munich, where Etienne Aigner met Heiner H. Rankl, a businessman with an unerring feeling for the future and a sense of tradition. Together they founded AIGNER in Munich in 1965.
Over the years the label grew into an international luxury brand with followers all over the world, holding on to its commitment to luxury, its love of the product and its world-famous horseshoe logo. Leather bags and accessories remain the core competence, with creative director Christian Alexander Beck and his team building each season around both trend-driven pieces and future classics such as the Cybill signature bag, whose one-of-one editions are handcrafted in a manufactory in Florence. The wider range — watches and jewellery, eyewear, shoes, womenswear, menswear and children's wear — is produced with licensing partners.
AIGNER presented itself at Milan Fashion Week for the first time in 2009. In May 2019 the brand moved into a new 4,000-square-metre headquarters in Munich housing a showroom, an in-house Modelleria and The Archive, a permanent journey through the designs of past decades where the Cybill bag is exhibited in all its facets alongside suitcases, classics, accessories and genuine collectors' items.
AIGNER watches are made by licensing partners rather than in Munich, and reach buyers through authorised watch retailers. What travels from the leather workshop to the wrist is the house signature: the horseshoe-shaped "A" is not only applied to dials and crowns but is taken literally in the case itself, and part of the men’s collection uses a horseshoe case shape rather than the usual round or rectangular forms.
The range covers men and women and stays in the accessible luxury segment. A representative men’s reference pairs a horseshoe stainless steel case of roughly 37 x 44mm with a quartz movement, a leather strap and 5 ATM of water resistance; women’s models run to steel bracelets and lighter, jewellery-adjacent designs. At authorised retailers the collection sits in a band of roughly 1,250 to 2,400 dirhams, placing AIGNER alongside the fashion-house watch brands rather than the manufactures — consistent with a company whose core competence remains leather goods.
