DISCOVER SOME ESSENTIAL WATCH SERVICING TIPS

Maintaining a watch isn't just about keeping it running; it's about preserving an intricate piece of craftsmanship. Tibor, a seasoned watchmaker and owner of Right Time Inc., shares invaluable advice for watch enthusiasts to ensure their timepieces last a lifetime.

Routine Cleaning
Tibor emphasizes the importance of daily care: "Always wipe your watch when you are not wearing it." This prevents dust, dirt, and oils from damaging the watch's materials and ensures that it maintains its lustre and function over time. A soft, lint-free cloth is all you need for this simple but effective routine.

Annual Check-Ups
"Check the water seal of the watch every year," Tibor advises. This is especially crucial for watches labeled as water-resistant, as the seal can degrade over time due to wear and environmental factors. Regular checks can prevent moisture from entering the watch, which is critical to avoid internal damage.

Avoid Chlorinated and Saltwater
Exposure to harsh environments can be detrimental. "Never wear the watch in a swimming pool or jacuzzi; chlorine is the biggest enemy of the rubber gaskets," warns Tibor. Similarly, if you swim in the ocean, it's important to rinse the watch with fresh water afterwards to remove any salt residue that can corrode metal parts and damage seals.

Caring for Quartz Watches
When it comes to quartz watches, maintenance is key before battery replacements: "For a quartz watch, clean the case as much as you can before you take it to replace the battery," suggests Tibor. This can prevent dirt from entering the watch's interior during the battery change. Moreover, he advises to use services where a qualified technician is present, highlighting that "watchmaker is not a licensed trade since 1992," which means the skill level can vary significantly.

Servicing Mechanical Watches
Mechanical watches require more attention due to their complex mechanisms. "Mechanical watches need service every 5-7 years," Tibor states. Regular servicing ensures that the movement remains accurate and the mechanical parts are well lubricated, minimizing wear over time.

Final advice
For aficionados with multiple automatic watches, Tibor gives a crucial piece of advice " Make sure to rotate the wear of each watch and manually winding them when needed to preserve the watch's mechanism more effectively.

By following Tibor's expert advice, watch owners can ensure their timepieces not only keep accurate time but also maintain their aesthetic and mechanical integrity for years to come.
