This interview aims to delve into the fascinating history of Richardson's Jewellery, exploring the inspirations, challenges, and aspirations that have shaped the store's legacy and continue to drive its success today.
- Can you share how Richardson's Jewellery was founded and the inspiration behind starting the business?
Richardson's Jewellery began as a family-owned store in 1967 with seven locations throughout Alberta and Saskatchewan. In 1989, a tragic family accident led to an opportunity for the store managers to purchase the business from the Richardson family estate. In 2002, Lloydminster’s Richardson's Jewellery owner approached my father, Wayne Fisher, and offered him a partnership with the intention of eventual ownership. Wayne had been working as a store manager for Peoples Jewellery since 1982. My sister, Nicole, joined my father in 2002, and I, Matt, came on board in 2008. Matt and Nicole became the owners in 2024.
- How has Richardson's Jewellery evolved since its inception, and what were some significant milestones in its history?
A major milestone was our renovation in the mall in 2012. When the lease ended a decade later, Richardson's Jewellery made a significant move to establish itself as a freestanding location, marking a new chapter in our history.
- What sets Richardson's Jewellery apart from other jewellers in the region, and how do you maintain your unique identity in the industry?
Wayne was born and raised in Lloydminster, and now Matt and Nicole are raising our families here as well. Our deep roots in the community have played a significant role in shaping our identity. The relationships we've built through church, school, and sports have become integral to our business.
- Can you discuss the values and principles guiding Richardson's Jewellery and how these have shaped your business practices over the years?
We are committed to honesty, loyalty, and integrity. These values extend beyond our interactions with clients; they also guide our relationships with staff and suppliers. This commitment has been foundational in building trust and fostering long-term partnerships.
- What role does family play in the business, and how has the family legacy influenced the store's growth and development?
Family is central to our business. Matt, Nicole, and Wayne each bring unique strengths to the table, and our collaboration as a family is a key factor in our success. Matt and Nicole are proud to continue the family legacy in Lloydminster and are excited about the future.
- How do you ensure the quality and craftsmanship of your jewellery pieces, and what standards do you adhere to?
We meticulously handpick every piece of jewellery that enters our store. Our trusted Canadian suppliers and a long-standing relationship with our goldsmith, who has been with us for over 40 years, ensure that we maintain high standards of quality and craftsmanship.
- What are some of the most memorable experiences or stories you’ve encountered with customers over the years?
One of the most rewarding aspects for Dad has been witnessing multiple generations of loyal clients. Seeing families continue their relationships with us over the years is incredibly fulfilling.
- Can you discuss the importance of community involvement and how Richardson's Jewellery has contributed to the local community?
Community involvement is crucial to us. Our store has been built by the community, and giving back is a priority. We are the lead sponsor for the Lloydminster Health Foundation Gala and have supported the Girls U15 AA hockey team for four years. Additionally, we contribute to numerous local charities and strive to support local businesses whenever possible.
- What are the biggest challenges you’ve faced in the jewellery industry, and how have you overcome them?
Recent challenges include the rise of online sales and the growing presence of lab-created diamonds. To address these, we’ve adapted by enhancing our website and social media presence, with Nicole leading these efforts over the past three years.
- Looking to the future, what are your aspirations for Richardson's Jewellery, and how do you plan to continue the store's legacy?
Leaving the mall was a significant step for us, and we are excited about the future. We aim to continue serving Lloydminster’s jewellery needs while supporting the community’s growth. We remain committed to our core values and look forward to what lies ahead.
