An Interview on Building Confidence, Brand Legacy, and the Evolving Watch Industry
I recently had the great pleasure of sitting down with Coralie Charriol, the dynamic force behind the Swiss luxury brand Charriol. Our conversation was a deep dive into the heart of the brand's philosophy, the evolving role of women in horology, and the timeless design elements that have captivated watch and jewelry lovers for decades.
Here are the key insights and highlights from our inspiring dialogue.
Building a Platform for Connection and Discovery
At the core of our mission is creating spaces that educate, entertain, and, most importantly, connect. We connect enthusiasts with the stories behind legendary brands and with the authorized retailers who bring these stories to life. While some in our audience are seasoned collectors, many are just beginning their journey. I asked Coralie what she would say to someone discovering Charriol for the first time.
Her message was powerful and direct, especially aimed at women.
Charriol's Message to Women: Confidence is Your Best Accessory
"For any woman who wants to buy herself a watch but feels nervous or intimidated, my message is simple: don't be," Coralie stated. "Charriol is here for you."
She passionately advocates for women to become confident self-purchasers.
"I want to educate women about watch movements so they don't feel embarrassed to ask questions or have to turn to their male counterparts with, 'Should I get this watch?' I want women to feel confident in their own taste and knowledge."
This mission is perfectly timed. Today, more women than ever are engaging with watches not just as timekeeping instruments but as ultimate fashion statements and pieces of wearable art. A watch is an accessory that speaks volumes about personal style.
Introducing the Mariner: A Bracelet That Tells Time
Coralie showcased her latest creation, the Mariner, which debuted at the prestigious Watches and Wonders fair in Geneva.
"The idea was to create something like a bracelet that tells time," she explained, highlighting the seamless blend of high jewelry and precision watchmaking that defines the Charriol aesthetic.
The Iconic San Tropez: A Legacy of Design
The conversation naturally turned to one of Charriol's most legendary pieces: the San Tropez. This bangle watch, adorned with a signature chain, is more than just a bestseller it's a piece of history.
"It was designed by my father, Philippe Charriol, in the late 1980s," Coralie shared. "It has been a cornerstone of our collection for over 30 years, proving that true design is timeless."
The Unmistakable DNA: The Cable Motif
What truly defines a Charriol piece? The answer is found in its unique DNA: the iconic cable motif. Originally pioneered by Philippe Charriol, this twisted rope design has become the brand's signature.
"Our DNA goes back to this cable motif that my father first used," Coralie noted. "I now incorporate it into almost all the jewelry and watches I design today. Honestly, if I don't include a touch of cable in a piece, nobody wants it! It's what gives Charriol its distinctive, unique look and keeps the brand's spirit alive and moving forward."
Women in Watchmaking: A Growing Force
Our discussion shifted to the broader landscape of the watch industry, where positive change is underway.
"It's an interesting fact that women already make up about 43% of the watch industry workforce," I mentioned. "While representation is still growing in the C-suite, women are leading the way in marketing, sales, communication, and even in the meticulous craftsmanship of factories from quality control to assembly and pavé setting."
Coralie agreed, adding a crucial economic perspective: "I think the industry is finally opening up to women, also because they represent about 50% of the purchasing power." This shift is driving a more inclusive and responsive market.
Inspiring the Next Generation
This alignment in our views on empowerment led us to discuss community and mentorship. I shared how, for recent International Women's Day celebrations, we hosted a panel of powerful women from the industry to share their stories and insights.
Coralie's enthusiasm was immediate: "That's wonderful!"
"It's about more than just discussion; it's about inspiration," I added. "As someone with young children, I firmly believe in supporting and motivating the next generation. It's incredible to see extraordinary women around the world, passionate about watchmaking, building strong communities. That's fantastic for all of us."
My conversation with Coralie Charriol was a testament to the power of heritage, innovation, and above all, confidence. Charriol transcends the category of a brand; it is an invitation to embrace individuality, appreciate craftsmanship, and carry our own story with pride. An invitation that is especially meaningful for women who are currently writing their own chapters in the world of luxury. In short, it was a dialogue that not only marked the end of our interview, but also left a clear impression: the future of this universe, driven by conviction and authenticity, is promising.
