WHY YOU SHOULD CHECK YOUR WATCH’S WATER RESISTANCE EVERY TWO YEARS

WHY YOU SHOULD CHECK YOUR WATCH’S WATER RESISTANCE EVERY TWO YEARS
A watch’s water resistance is not a permanent feature, it degrades over time. Whether you own a dive watch rated for 300 meters or a dress watch with basic splash resistance, regular water resistance checks are essential to ensure your timepiece remains protected. One of the key reasons for this is the natural wear and tear of the gaskets inside the watch.

How Temperature Changes Affect Watch Gaskets

The gaskets inside your watch, usually made of rubber or synthetic materials, are responsible for keeping moisture and dust out. However, these gaskets don’t last forever, and one major factor that causes them to deteriorate is temperature fluctuation.

  • Heat Exposure (Stretching)
When your watch is exposed to heat, such as wearing it in a sauna, hot tub, or during summer, it causes the rubber gaskets to expand. This stretching weakens the material over time, making it less effective at sealing the case.

  • Cold Exposure (Shrinking)
In colder environments, the gaskets contract, sometimes creating tiny gaps that allow water or moisture to seep in. Repeated exposure to these temperature changes accelerates the aging process of the gasket, making it brittle and less elastic.

Over time, this constant cycle of expansion and contraction leads to a loss of water resistance, even if your watch was initially rated to withstand significant depths.

Why a Biannual Water Resistance Test is Crucial

To ensure your watch remains sealed and protected, it’s highly recommended to have its water resistance checked every two years (or annually if frequently exposed to water). A professional watchmaker will:

1.Inspect the Gaskets: Checking for cracks, stiffness, or deformation.

2.Replace if Needed: Worn-out gaskets will be replaced to restore proper sealing.

3.Perform a Pressure Test: This confirms whether the watch maintains its rated water resistance.

Neglecting these checks could lead to moisture intrusion, which can cause irreversible damage to the movement, dial, and hands. Repairing a water-damaged watch can be expensive, whereas a simple water resistance test is a small preventive measure that saves you from costly repairs.

If you love your watch and want to keep it in top condition, don’t overlook the importance of water resistance maintenance. Temperature changes, daily wear, and aging gaskets all contribute to the slow breakdown of your watch’s water resistance. A simple test every two years ensures your watch stays safe, functional, and ready for any adventure, on land or underwater.
