WORLD WATCH DAY — WHY CELEBRATE TIMEPIECES?

Twice a day, a watch offers us a quiet smile; once in the morning to gently begin our journey, and once at night to reassure us that all will be well.

By Grigor Garabedian

My lifelong pursuit of anything and everything related to watches finally has a day to be celebrated. October 10 is a moment to pause and reflect on the expertise, passion, and artistry that define these extraordinary objects. 10:10 is when the hands of a watch frame the logo in perfect symmetry and offer us a (quiet) smile.

Watches have been part of modern human history since the 16th century. Over time, they’ve evolved from functional tools into deeply personal companions. The connection we’ve developed with our timepieces has left a mark on culture, history, and even the way we experience time itself. These are not just instruments; they are reflections of who we are.

We don’t merely own watches. We wear them, strap them to our person, and carry them with us through every chapter of life. From adventurous explorations in the wilderness to the elegance of red-carpet events, watches are always present, adapted to the occasion and keeping pace with our stories.

So why celebrate watches?

Because, in a way, they’ve celebrated us. They’ve carried our memories, marked our accomplishments, and stood witness to our most meaningful moments. These little machines have done more than measure time, they’ve honored it.

Every timepiece is a composition of elements that speak to both engineering and emotion. The case and bracelet, often milled from exceptional alloys, invite us to appreciate their textures and reflections of light; whether a satin brushing or a mirror-like polish. These finishes, paired with the materials, give the watch its visual substance and tactile presence.

But what truly brings a watch to life is the interplay between movement, dial, hands, and crystal. The movement is its heartbeat and brains behind the beauty. The dial is its face, its character, the canvas of its identity. The hands are its voice, guiding us through each passing moment. And the crystal? It’s the lens; framing the dial, inviting the eye but resisting the hand, preserving the mystery within.

On this day, I celebrate the watch not just as a tool, but as a companion. A keeper of time, a bearer of stories, and a quiet witness to the lives we lead.
